AIN GlobalComm obtains a MVNO license
AIN GlobalComm Co.,Ltd. (AIN), a subsidiary of Thailand’s largest mobile operator, Advanced Info Service PCL (AIS), has obtained a non-facilities based medium MVNO license.
AIN was launched in 2007, as an International Telephone Service Gateway, providing IDD calls to other countries using the prefix 00500, and it is still providing this service today at: www.ain.co.th
The setup in 2007 was however not a smooth one. The state enterprise telecom operator CAT Telecom, questioned the setup, which ended up as a case in the Council of State.
Three MVNO licenses
The MVNO license, awarded by the national telecom operator in Thailand (NBTC) to AIN, is a Non-facilities based Medium MVNO, and has the license number 1/63/001. It is valid until January 2025 (can be extended with 5-years every 5 year)
With the license for AIN GlobalComm Co.,Ltd – AIS now has three subsidiaries with MVNO licenses. The two others are:
Advanced Info Service Public Company Limited with license number 1/58/029 for a thin MVNO
Advanced Wireless Network Company Limited (AWN) with the license: NBTC/FREQ /TEL /55/1 – which include MVNO.
Neither AIS, nor the two other private mobile operators in Thailand (TRUE and DTAC) are hosting MVNOs, despite their license terms stating they have to provide at least 10% of its capacity to MVNOs.
AIS and CAT Telecom?
Speculation is, that AIS could use the AIN MVNO license, to do a pseudo MVNO workaround deal – similar to the one it has today with the state enterprise operator TOT on 2100MHz – but with CAT Telecom, who acquired two 700MHz slots at the 5G license auction in February this year.
