India has presented a $35 dollar tablet PC.

IT engineers from Bangalore's Indian Institute of Science (IISc) have revealed a $35 dollars tablet.

"This is our answer to MIT's $100 computer (One laptop – One child),"human resource development minister Kapil Sibal said as he unveiled the device.

In 2005, Nicholas Negroponte – cofounder of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Media Lab (MIT) unveiled a prototype $100 laptop for children in the developing world.

India rejected the MIT’s project as too expensive and embarked on a multiyear effort to develop a cheaper option of its own.
Mamta Varma, a ministry spokeswoman, said the tablet design cuts hardware costs, and the use of open-source software also adds to the savings.

The tablet doesn't have a hard disk, but instead uses a memory card, much like we know it from a mobile phone. The tablet is also able to run on solar power.

The tablet project is part of India’s ambitious education technology initiative, which also aims to bring broadband connectivity to India's 25,000 colleges and 504 universities and make study materials available online.

The tablet runs on Linux and on the video you can clearly see the familiar Android notification bar at the top of the prototype. There are currently negotiating going on with manufactures and the project is aiming at releasing the first commercial model early 2011
